07.26.2009: rest day
total running miles for the week: 70 miles [2009: 1,139 miles]
a couple of days into my week i read a blog post by my friend spirit-flower. in her post she referred to running as her home. the rest of the week i found myself meditating on the phrase: "running is my home". i love it! "running is my home", captures so much of the reality of what running means to me and packs it into a nice compact little portable phrase. this week i experienced running as my home. someone asked me yesterday if i get bored on a four hour run - absolutely not - for four hours i experience being at home.
we traveled this week to the chicago area to visit family. i had a semi-long run in my heart for sometime during the weekend, so i inquired with my brother (from-another-mother) about the possibility of any trails nearby. he brought the "des plaines river trail" to my attention. thursday evening we scoped it out and i was amazed at what i saw: a trail ideal for a super long run (soft surface, primarily shaded, accessible water, restrooms, and 31 miles long).
friday i experienced the joy of running this trail. i went 12 miles north and back, and loved every minute of it. saturday i ran 6 more miles on it with my wife. we started where i started the day before, but went to the south and back. someday i hope to experience the entire trail in one run.
this past week i have experienced some hunger for a racing event. in some ways i feel like a golfer who has been spending hours on the range and the putting green, but has not stepped on a course in months. i am really looking forward to the fall marathoning season. the first event on the schedule is the 9.11 ultra in kansas, then the omaha marathon on 9.27, des moines marathon on 10.18, and tulsa's route 66 marathon on 11.22. i am feeling so ready to partake.
cheers to another week of running and living in heart-harmony!
