04.05.2009: rest day [HERE IS THE UPDATE: i couldn't do it - after sitting in the house watching a couple hours of inspiring ultramarathon content on youtube, i gave in and got out of the house for another six mile run] 6 miles of running on frisco trail in willard, mo.: 46 minutes and 21 seconds

total running miles for the week: 36 miles [2009: 377]
total walking miles for the week: 14 miles [2009: 59]

it was good to be back to weight-bearing training activities. i intended to run six days this week, but a minor groin injury slowed me down a little. i think it was just a matter of reorienting my body after the break. i am hoping the week ahead includes 42 running miles over 6 days - including a 8 miler on the "frisco" experimenting with my strategy for the "frisco fifty".

thanks mark - i am feeling really confident and strong today. now it is just a matter of not doing anything stupid between now and the start of the event :) it was fun to run a portion of the frisco yesterday that i had not yet been on. i started beyond willard to try and find some wind protection. ever since i started running on the frisco, i have always wanted to go all the way - so i am really excited about the opportunity to do just that on the 18th. my gaiters are scheduled to arrive today - so i am looking forward to giving them a try too.

That Frisco Fifty sounds like a lot of fun. And I love those Goggins videos. He IS a machine.

As you can tell from my splits, I'm not going to be up with your pace at the Flying Pig. My goal is going to be to average a sub-10 minute pace for the entire thing. With the hills involved...that's going to be a challenge for me, especially after mile 15/16. My main goal is to break the 4 hr barrier since I barely squeaked in under 5 hours in Columbus.

hey chris,

yep - i am pretty excited about the "frisco" - it ought to be a pretty unique event experience.

we (scott and i) are still working through our strategy for the "flying pig". at one point it looked like scott was going to drop down to the half due to achilles issues, but now it looks like he is back in and he want a commitment from me that i will work with him for the first 18 miles.

i too would like to sub-4. it appears that a 4 hour marathon involves 9:09 splits. i am guessing that scott and i will be around a 9:09 split for those first 18. we will be employing one minute walk segments at every mile marker (off of the gps watch). you are still welcome to run/walk with us if you want to give that pace a go.

goggins really is an inspirtion - that one 150 mile event at mcnaughton park really has my interest :)

looking forward to seeing you in about 27 days.
